چکیده

We performed serological and pathological studies on 495 patients with Chagas' disease from different areas of Bolivia. Eighty-nine Trypanosoma cruzi strains, isolated by xenodiagnosis, were characterized by 12 isoenzyme loci and were related to the presence of cardiac changes and enteric disease with megacolon. There was a high heterogeneity of human zymodemes, presenting evidence of 2 predominant zymodemes genetically dissimilar from each other and ubiquitous in Bolivia. The frequencies of these predominant zymodemes among strains from patients were compared to strains from triatomine bugs previously studied. We observed mixtures of different zymodemes within the same patient, a phenomenon seen previously in Bolivian patients. There was no apparent difference of pathogenicity between the 2 more frequent zymodemes isolated from humans.

Trypanocidal activity of some endemic species of Satureja in Iran

Trypanosoma cruzi, a hemoflagellate protozoan (family Trypanosomatidae), is the ethiological agent of Chagas disease, which is affecting 16-18 million people, with more than 100 million exposed to the risk of infection. Higher plants are a potential source of new drugs to improve the treatment of Chagase disease. Until recently, Rutacea, Meliaceae, Simaroubaceae and Burceraceae families have be...

Agent of Chagas' disease from Honduran vector capable of developing in California insects: implications for cardiologists.

An exotic strain of Trypanosoma cruzi recovered from Triatoma dimidiata from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, was shown by isoenzyme studies to be closely related to the Miles' zymodeme 1 and laboratory reference strain Tehuantepec. It was injected into Swiss random-bred ICR mice. Clean Triatoma protracta nymphs and adults, which had been captured in Winters, California, fed on inoculated mice and were t...

Cytokine Profiling in Chagas Disease: Towards Understanding the Association with Infecting Trypanosoma cruzi Discrete Typing Units (A BENEFIT TRIAL Sub-Study)

BACKGROUND Chagas disease caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi is an important public health problem in Latin America. The immunological mechanisms involved in Chagas disease pathogenesis remain incompletely elucidated. The aim of this study was to explore cytokine profiles and their possible association to the infecting DTU and the pathogenesis of Chagas disease. METHODS 109 sero-positi...

Predominance of Trypanosoma cruzi lineage I in Mexico.

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) has emerged as an effective genetic marker for analysis of Trypanosoma cruzi population variability. This method has been used to study the genetic variability of Mexican T. cruzi stocks and to relate these results to previous classifications. High clonal diversity was observed among the Mexican populations: 24 RAPD types were scored among 56 stocks ana...
